Who this is for: someone who wants the sorting chamber as well as the grinder, and wants it in steel rather than aluminium.
Four parts means lid, teeth, a mesh screen, and a chamber underneath. Ground material falls through the screen; the finer powder that comes off it falls further and collects separately. Three-part grinders have no screen, so nothing is separated.
Steel rather than aluminium is what you are paying for. It does not soften, the threads do not seize where they meet, and the teeth do not wear round over years. It is also heavy, which does the work for you on a table and is noticeable in a pocket.
On the material: Herb Ripper's own wording is “100% medical grade stainless steel”. Herb Ripper give no grade number on any page we have read (product pages, FAQ, team page; 23 Sept and 3 Oct). The phrase describes the metal. It does not make the grinder a medical device.
Herb Ripper give it as 2″ across and 1.125″ tall (about 29 mm) — shorter than their 3-piece at 1.375″ — and weigh it at .99 lbs (about 450 g).
