Grinding is not fussiness — it is most of what decides whether a vaporiser works properly. Air has to pass through the material rather than around it, and a hand-torn lump has channels through it that the air simply takes, leaving the rest untouched and wasting what you paid for. An even grind is why one person's device seems better than another's when they own the same model.
There is a second reason worth knowing, and it argues for grinding little and often. Cannabis resin sits in glands on the surface of the plant; a 1976 study still cited today described those glands as acting like well-filled, well-closed containers. Grinding opens them. So grinding as you go preserves more than grinding a week's worth at once.
