Cartridge: 510 batteries compared

Our 510 batteries can look alike on paper. Each part below names the ones that fit it, so you can go straight to what matters to you. How a 510 battery works is in our 510 battery guide.

All of them are in our 510 batteries.

In short

  • Every battery here takes a standard 510 cartridge. What decides whether yours fits is the cartridge's width, not how much oil it holds.
  • The setting on a 510 battery is a voltage, not a temperature. Which setting suits your cartridge is a question for your dispensing pharmacy. Voltage tends to affect how much vapour you get and how it feels: higher gives more, and a warmer, harsher draw; lower gives less, and a cooler, smoother one.
  • They range from pens with nothing to set to batteries you adjust in 0.1V steps. The more settings, the more there is to learn, but the more options and control you have.
  • Most heat up as soon as you breathe in through them, with nothing to press. Two let you choose: breathe in, or hold the button. Two, the Vessel Compass and the Cartisan Inspector, heat only while you hold the button down. On the G Pen Hydout, it depends on the colour.
  • Cost runs from basic to premium. Paying more does not always buy more features, but it can mean better-quality materials.
  • Beyond that, it comes down to what suits you: the shape (a slim pen, something that sits in a closed hand, a pipe, or a case the cartridge hides in), a screen or simple lights, a preheat for oil that has gone thick, how often you want to charge it, whether it switches fully off in a bag, and extras such as holding two cartridges at once.

Four places to start

If none of these fits what you need, the parts below go through the rest.

Will your cartridge fit?

Every battery here takes a standard 510 cartridge: the kind with a small threaded metal post underneath. What decides the fit is the cartridge's width. The 0.5ml or 1ml on the label tells you how much it holds, not how wide it is.

All the 510 batteries we stock take a cartridge up to 10.5mm wide (the G Pen Hydout is covered below).

Cartridges vary in width, so please measure yours at its widest point before you buy. Montu Pharmacy says its standard 0.5g and 1g cartridges fit the CCELL Palm Pro and CCELL Sandwave, which take up to 11mm, and the G Pen Hydout. Newgrove Pharmacy describes the Hydout as "designed for use with standard 510 thread cartridges", without giving a width. Other pharmacies don't specify online.

This table is based on what we've been able to find out about each battery, from the makers' and suppliers' published details. It shows the widest cartridge each one is known to take, so treat it as a minimum: some may take wider, but we weren't always able to find the exact specifications.

Some take wider, please see below:

Battery Widest cartridge it takes Worth knowing
CCELL M4 Any width Pen: the cartridge screws on top, so the battery sets no limit
CCELL M3 Any width Pen: the cartridge screws on top, so the battery sets no limit
CCELL M3B Any width Pen: the cartridge screws on top, so the battery sets no limit
CCELL Stylo 14mm
CCELL M4B Pro 14mm
Cartisan The Inspector 14mm Up to 62mm tall
Cartisan Veil Bar Flow 14mm Up to 52mm tall (a 12mm one, up to 58mm)
Cartisan Veil Bar Pro Evo 14mm Up to 51mm tall (a 12mm one, up to 62mm)
Cartisan Veil Bar Duo 14mm Up to 45mm tall, each side
CCELL Palm Pro 11mm Most 2g cartridges will not fit
CCELL Sandwave About 11mm A UK pharmacy's figure; CCELL don't publish one
CCELL Palm SE 10.5mm Whether a wider one fits: we don't know
Vessel Compass 10.5mm Anything over 11.5mm won't fit; between 10.5mm and 11.5mm, we can't confirm
G Pen Hydout We don't know G Pen give no width

If you're not sure whether your cartridge will fit, please check with your pharmacy. If you still need help, ask us and we'll check with our suppliers.

What it costs

For a lot of people, cost decides it.

Typically, the cheaper batteries are the simplest, without extra features: the CCELL M4 and M3 have nothing to set and no preheat.

The more expensive ones tend to have more features and more ways to adjust them, such as finer voltage steps, two cartridges at once or an airflow collar. Paying more can also mean better design or higher-quality materials.

But cost and features don't always line up. The Stylo, at entry level, has three preset settings, a preheat and a screen. The Compass, at the top, has four preset settings, coloured lights, no preheat, and the cartridge sits inside a case.

Current prices are on each product page. From the cheapest band up:

The key setting on a 510 battery: voltage

The setting on a 510 battery is a voltage: how hard the battery drives the heating coil. It is not a temperature. The coil is not in the battery: it is part of the cartridge your pharmacy supplies, and coils are designed differently from one cartridge to another. So the same setting can run warmer in one cartridge than in another.

Generally, voltage affects how much vapour you get and how it feels: higher gives more, and a warmer, harsher draw; lower gives less, and a cooler, smoother one. CCELL describe their own three settings the same way: "2.8V for maximum flavor", "3.2V for a well-balanced experience", "3.6V for maximum vapor".

That is a general pattern, not a promise for your cartridge, and which setting you should use is for your pharmacy to advise. For example, Montu Pharmacy's battery pages say: "Our oil cartridge manufacturers recommend not exceeding 3.2V". Its FAQ page says: "Try not to go over 4.0 volts." What a higher setting does to the oil is set out in our 510 battery guide.

The settings on each battery:

Preheat

A preheat warms the cartridge gently for a few seconds before you draw. How thick the oil in your cartridge is can affect whether it is worth having: it is mainly for thicker oils, and for oil that has gone thick in the cold. G Pen say: "For thick oils or cold environments, try the preheat function". Montu Pharmacy warn that, without a preheat, a full draw on a fresh cartridge "can risk burning out the ceramic heating element, particularly with our premium oils, which are thicker and need a moment to soften". Your pharmacy can tell you how thick your oil is.

Drawing or pressing a button

There are two ways a 510 battery can start heating. With most, you just breathe in through it ("draw") and it heats; there is nothing to press. With others, you hold a button down while you breathe in. Some let you do either.

Even on batteries you just breathe in through, there is usually still a button: it switches the battery on and off, changes the setting or runs the preheat. On the Hydout that is five presses to switch on, three to change setting and two for the preheat.

Hold the button while you breathe in

G Pen Hydout. Montu Pharmacy say the black one is "Button-activated" and the translucent colours are "Breath-activated: an airflow sensor fires the device automatically when you inhale". G Pen say the translucent Retro edition "adds breath activation for effortless, button-free operation".

Switching it off

When a battery is switched off, drawing on it does nothing, so it will not go off in a bag or pocket.

Screens and lights

Screens and lights show you what the battery is doing.

The simplest is one small light, for things like charging. Coloured lights tell you a bit more, such as the setting or how much charge is left. A screen shows words or numbers: the setting, the charge left and, on some, a count of your puffs.

A few batteries also have a small window, so you can see how much oil is left.

Battery capacity and charging

Battery capacity is measured in mAh (milliamp-hours). A bigger number means fewer charges, not a stronger draw.

How it charges. All charge by USB-C except the M3 and M3B, which charge through their screw thread with a small USB charger from the box.

How long it takes to charge. Only Cartisan publish a time:

About 90 minutes
About 115 minutes

The others. Their makers don't say.

Using it while it charges. Some batteries can't be used while they are plugged in.

Depends on the colour
G Pen Hydout. For the black one, G Pen's FAQ says "For safety, we recommend waiting until the device is fully charged before use." For the translucent colours, G Pen say the Retro edition "adds breath activation for effortless, button-free operation and USB-C pass-through charging", which means you can use it while it charges.
Not recommended

How long a charge lasts. Most makers give only the battery capacity, not how long a charge lasts. G Pen are the one exception: the Hydout "offers multiple sessions per charge, depending on your voltage setting and usage. At lower voltages, it can last all day with moderate use." For the others, we don't know.

How much charge each holds. A longer bar means fewer charges, not a stronger draw.

Shape and size

Shape and size decide how a battery sits in your hand, and whether it slips easily into a pocket or bag.

For comparison, a bank card is about 86 × 54mm, a large egg weighs 63g to 73g, and a £1 coin 8.75g.

Sizes are in millimetres (height × width × depth), from the makers' and suppliers' published details. Few makers give a weight. Where a maker, a supplier or a review does, we show it; treat these as approximate.

Other features

These are extras that only some batteries have.

Some make everyday use easier: the battery remembers your last setting, the cartridge fixes on with a magnet instead of screwing in, or the cartridge is covered and out of sight. Others give you something different, such as two cartridges at once or a collar to change the airflow. Some also stop heating on their own after a long draw.

Stops after a long draw
CCELL M4 CCELL M4B Pro after about 10 seconds; the four Cartisan batteries after 10 to 15 seconds.
Two cartridges at once, each at its own setting
A collar to open or close the airflow
CCELL Palm Pro. You move the collar to make the air gap bigger or smaller. That changes how hard you have to draw, and how the vapour feels. CCELL describe three positions: fully open, "For less dense clouds and cooler vapors"; halfway, "Happy medium for flavor and clouds"; narrowly open, "For warm, dense, tasty clouds."
Heats on its own for up to 15 seconds
Cartisan Veil Bar Flow, in what Cartisan call "Share mode". Two quick presses start it, and it heats without you drawing or holding the button. Cartisan: "Press twice within 1.5s to enable automatic smoking." It is not a preheat, which warms the cartridge gently at a low setting before you draw; the Flow has no preheat.
Magnetic connection, no screwing in
CCELL Palm Pro (with a small ring fitted to the cartridge, one in the box) and CCELL Sandwave
Cartridge covered or hidden
G Pen Hydout (magnetic cover), Vessel Compass (inside the case, with a swivel to line up the mouthpiece), CCELL Stylo (a deep slot), CCELL Palm SE CCELL Sandwave (sits down inside the body).

The simplest

The CCELL M4: one setting, no button, and the cheapest one in stock. The CCELL M3 is just as simple, with no button at all. Neither has a preheat or a lower setting.

If you want a little more without much more to learn, the CCELL Stylo is near the bottom on price and adds three preset settings, a preheat and a screen.

The makers

  • CCELL: more than any other maker. Mostly simple batteries you draw on, with three preset settings, from the basic M3 and M4 to the palm-shaped Palm SE and Palm Pro. The widest choice at the lower prices.
  • Cartisan: four. All go down to 1.8V, the lowest here, and all hold more charge than any CCELL. The Pro Evo and Inspector change in the smallest steps.
  • G Pen: one, the Hydout. Five preset settings, a preheat, and a magnetic cover over the cartridge.
  • Vessel: one, the Compass. The cartridge sits inside a smooth case. Four preset settings, no preheat.

Battery by battery

CCELL M4
CCELL M4

Why choose it Nothing to set and nothing to get wrong: screw the cartridge on and draw. Cheap enough to keep as a spare. Worth knowing It is fixed at 3.6V and has no preheat, so you can't turn it down or warm a thick cartridge first. One of the two smallest batteries here (290mAh), so it needs charging more often.

CCELL M3
CCELL M3

Why choose it There is nothing to press and nothing to set. You draw, and it heats. The cheapest battery here. Sellers give its output as 3.2V to 3.6V, and call it "self-adapting". Worth knowing Sellers say: "The downside of this modification is the inability to adjust the vaping temperature or employ a button for cartridge preheating." It has no charging socket either. It charges through its screw thread, with a small USB charger that screws in where the cartridge goes. Without that charger it cannot be charged.

CCELL Stylo
CCELL Stylo

Why choose it Three preset settings, starting at 2.4V. You draw and it heats, and a side button runs a 15-second preheat. It has a screen, a window to see the oil, a large 500mAh battery, and it takes cartridges up to 14mm wide. Worth knowing Its highest setting is 3.2V. If you want more vapour than that, it will not go there. CCELL don't say what the screen shows; sellers say the setting and battery level.

CCELL M4B Pro
CCELL M4B Pro

Why choose it Three preset settings and a 10-second preheat in a slim pen that takes cartridges up to 14mm wide. It heats when you breathe in through it. Like the M3B, it switches fully off with five quick presses. Worth knowing A smaller 290mAh battery, like the M4. If you switch it off between uses, switching it back on is one more step each time.

CCELL Palm SE
CCELL Palm SE

Why choose it Palm-shaped, so you hold it in a closed hand, which is easier if grip is difficult. The cartridge sits down inside the body. You draw to heat it, it has a 15-second preheat, an oil window and a 500mAh battery. Worth knowing It is listed for 10.5mm cartridges. We don't know whether wider ones fit, so check the fit table first.

CCELL Palm Pro
CCELL Palm Pro

Why choose it It has a collar that opens and closes the airflow. CCELL describe three positions: "FULLY OPEN - For less dense clouds and cooler vapors", "HALFWAY OPEN - Happy medium for flavor and clouds", "NARROWLY OPEN - For warm, dense, tasty clouds." Palm-shaped, with a magnetic drop-in connection, a 10-second preheat and a large 500mAh battery. Worth knowing CCELL say the magnetic connection "Requires prior connection with magnetic cartridge nut": a small ring is fitted to the cartridge, and one comes in the box. It takes cartridges up to 11mm wide, and most 2g cartridges will not fit.

CCELL M3B
CCELL M3B

Why choose it A slim pen with three preset settings, which the M3 does not have. It switches fully off with five quick presses, so it cannot go off in a pocket. Sellers say "you will never accidentally turn on the device." Worth knowing No preheat. We don't know whether it heats when you breathe in, when you hold the button, or both: sellers describe it both ways. Like the M3, it charges through its thread with a screw-in USB charger, not a socket.

CCELL Sandwave
CCELL Sandwave

Why choose it You change the setting with a slide switch, not a run of presses, so you can see and feel which setting you are on. Magnetic drop-in connection, no buttons, and a window on each side to see the oil. Worth knowing No preheat. A UK pharmacy says it takes cartridges up to about 11mm wide.

Vessel Compass
Vessel Compass

Why choose it A pebble-shaped case with the cartridge inside it. Vessel: "Drop-in design for cartridge protection." Four preset settings from 2.4V, a 550mAh battery, and it switches itself off if left on. Worth knowing No preheat, and it heats only while you hold the button. A 10.5mm cartridge fits; a 14mm one does not.

G Pen Hydout
G Pen Hydout

Why choose it Five preset settings (2.4 / 2.8 / 3.2 / 3.6 / 3.8V), plus a 10-second preheat at 1.8V. A magnetic cover hides the cartridge. G Pen say it "helps preserve oil quality" by keeping light off it. It switches itself off when left on: after 2 minutes, says the manual; after 10 minutes, says the help page. Worth knowing How it heats depends on the colour: the black one while you hold the button, the translucent colours when you breathe in. Switching on, the settings and the preheat are all button presses. G Pen's instructions: "Press the power button 3 times to cycle through the 5 voltage levels"; for preheat, "press the power button twice quickly"; and "Press the power button 5 times quickly to turn the Hydout on or off." If quick repeated pressing is hard for you, that matters.

Cartisan Veil Bar Flow
Cartisan Veil Bar Flow

Why choose it Five preset settings, starting at 1.8V, among the lowest here. It heats when you breathe in, or while you hold the button. Two quick presses start what Cartisan call "Share mode", which heats it on its own and "Stops after 15s of continuous operation." A 650mAh battery. Worth knowing No preheat. Cartisan: "No auto-shutdown; must be powered off manually." It takes about 80 minutes to charge and can't be used while charging.

Cartisan Veil Bar Duo
Cartisan Veil Bar Duo

Why choose it It holds two cartridges, and each side has its own setting. In Cartisan's words: "Independent voltage adjustment for left and right channels." Five preset settings from 1.8V, a 15-second preheat at 1.8V, and it heats when you breathe in. Worth knowing It heats only when you breathe in. Cartisan: "Hold button won't trigger vaping." Each side takes a cartridge up to 14mm wide and 45mm tall, so a tall cartridge may not fit.

Cartisan Veil Bar Pro Evo
Cartisan Veil Bar Pro Evo

Why choose it A 1000mAh battery, the largest here. You set the voltage in 0.1V steps, anywhere from 1.8V to 4.2V, and it has an 8-second preheat at 1.8V. Cartisan: "Both head and button smoking supported", which means it heats when you breathe in or when you press the button. Worth knowing Fine steps mean more pressing to get where you want: Cartisan say "Click button = +0.1V per press." It takes cartridges up to 14mm wide and 51mm tall, or 12mm wide and 62mm tall. About 115 minutes to charge, and it can't be used while charging.

Cartisan The Inspector
Cartisan The Inspector

Why choose it Shaped like a traditional pipe. The voltage goes in 0.1V steps from 1.8V to 4.2V, with an 8-second preheat at 1.8V. A screen shows the battery level and counts your puffs. It takes cartridges up to 14mm wide and 62mm tall, the tallest here. Worth knowing 0.1V steps mean a lot of presses: Cartisan say "Each press increases 0.1V. Hold button to increase continuously." It heats only while you hold the button: Cartisan call it "Button-Activated". On oil, Cartisan say: "thick wax or oil substances cannot be used with The Inspector because they're too dense to heat evenly. Some oils may be used, but they need to be thin enough to wick well."

Settings and your prescription

Nothing here is advice about your treatment, your dose, or what setting to use. Those are for your prescribing clinician and your dispensing pharmacy, including the highest voltage your cartridge should run at. What we can tell you is what each battery can do, and where the published information runs out.
