The heater cover encloses the heating element. Arizer are explicit that if it becomes cracked or damaged it should be replaced straight away, for safety — this is not a part to run on while you get round to it.
It is glass, and glass in a hot machine eventually meets an accident. A spare in the drawer means the machine is not out of action while one is ordered.
