Voltage is the setting that matters. It decides how hard the battery drives the heating element inside your cartridge, which decides how hot the oil gets. CCELL label the three settings themselves: 2.8V for taste, 3.2V for a balance, 3.6V for a bigger draw. Too low and very little happens, and the cartridge feels faulty when it is not. Too high and the oil overheats — it tastes burnt, and it can spoil a cartridge. Pressing the button three times quickly moves through the settings, and the light changes colour to show you where you are.
The lock is the real reason to pick this over the cheaper M4. Five quick presses turns the battery right off, so it cannot fire in a bag or a pocket, and it cannot be set going by a child who picks it up. Five more turns it back on. If there are children in the house, that is worth the difference on its own.
The preheat is a short, gentle warm-up. Thick oil goes sluggish when it is cold and becomes hard to draw through; ten seconds of warming sorts it out.
